However, as a resort and second-home destination the current population can change dramatically with the season. South Padre Island is known for its fine sandy beaches, excellent fishing and water sports as well as its charming island-style hospitality. This area is also unique environmentally. The Laguna Madre Bay is a rare hyper-saline bay and the Gulf of Mexico is home to many varied and unique species. Guests to the island find a visit to the Sea Turtle rescue facility or the World Birding Center is a great way to get to know the special environment found on South Padre Island.
